History of UNUSIA
The long journey of the Nahdlatul Ulama University of Indonesia in realizing its ideals of providing excellent higher education with strong character.
The Beginnings of NU Education
Developing education has always been a priority within the NU organization. Since its founding in 1926, NU has established various educational units, such as Islamic Boarding Schools (Pondok Pesantren), Islamic Elementary Madrasahs (Madrasah Diniyah Awaliyah and Ibtidaiyah), Junior High Madrasahs (Tsanawiyah), and Middle/Upper Teacher Training Madrasahs (Mulallimin Wustha and Ulya).
Formation of YPTNU
The Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) formed a foundation named the Nahdlatul Ulama Higher Education Foundation (Yayasan Perguruan Tinggi Nahdlatul Ulama - YPTNU) through PBNU Decree Number 929/A.II.03/6/1998.
Planning for UNU
This foundation collaborated with NU figures to plan the establishment of an international-standard Nahdlatul Ulama University (UNU).
Establishment of STAINU
The grand vision began to take shape gradually with the establishment of the Nahdlatul Ulama Islamic College of Religion (Sekolah Tinggi Agama Islam Nahdlatul Ulama - STAINU).
Direct Management by NU
Based on the results of the Plenary Meeting in Wonosobo, PBNU mandated that the management of higher education institutions must directly use the legal entity of the Nahdlatul Ulama Association. Consequently, YPTNU was dissolved, and all assets were placed under the direct management of NU.
University Operational License
The operational license for the university was granted through the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia Number 557/E/O/2014, featuring 10 (ten) Study Programs.
Merger of STAINU & FAI
Through recommendations from the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag RI) and the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education (Kemenristekdikti), PBNU issued a decree merging STAINU Jakarta into UNUSIA. In 2017, STAINU officially became the Faculty of Islamic Studies (Fakultas Agama Islam - FAI) at UNUSIA, managing 16 Study Programs.
Moving Towards an Excellent University
The Nahdlatul Ulama University of Indonesia continues to be developed to become a leading, high-quality university both within the NU higher education network and at the national level.
